The Broken Column painting by Frida Kahlo. A true work of art, the consequence of the traffic accident in which Frida got injured. It is a very painful depiction of her state of mind and body in the recovery stage following a spinal surgery. The operation was a success, but it left her bedridden and “enclosed” in a metallic corset, to ease her pain. The painting portrays Frida Kahlo standing in the middle of a cracked landscape. Her torso confined by belts of metal and fabric which prevent her body from collapsing. The fragility manifest on her torso, by the image of a fractured Ionic column in the brink of collapse.
Frida’s head rests on the capital. Although her face bathed in tears, she does not reflect any sign of pain. The attitude she presents is the one she always showed to life itself: strong and defiant to the viewer. The nails piercing her body are a symbol of the constant pain she faced. Large nails, hammered to the broken column, show the extent of the damage caused by the accident in 1925. Those adhering to her left breast refer rather to an emotional pain, to her feeling of solitude. She depicted herself as a solitary being, the reason for it: alone she was and knew herself the best.
